Foundations Of Fine Art

6100 – Foundations of Fine Art
2 credits – semester
Level: CP
An introductory course which is a prerequisite for all other visual arts courses.  Students will understand how artists apply the art elements, design principles, and vocabulary in two dimensional and three dimensional works of art. Students will experiment with a range of media and will explore image-making and personal interpretation through both observation and imagination.  Students will develop appropriate studio habits and will be responsible for sketchbook assignments, which complement classroom projects. Only one Foundations level course is required to progress on to upper level Visual Art Courses.
Class Description
Students will understand, interpret, and create a variety of  two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and time-based works of art. Students will experiment with a range of media and will explore image-making and personal interpretation through both observation and imagination.     Students will develop studio/community habits in line with personal and shared goals.
Classroom Experience
Art-Making Techniques: Students will be presented with tools to build new skills of drawing, painting, sculpture, etc. Students are expected to follow instructions and take risks to learn these new skills.
Personal Art Practice: Students will have the opportunity to create their own works incorporating the skills learned in each unit. The successfulness of this artwork is based on individual and shared goals.
Studio Community: Students are expected to clean up their materials and assist with the cleaning of the classroom. Students are also expected to help each other through projects and give feedback during critiques.

Projects: Long-term Art, Website Design
Workshops: Skill building, Art Activities, Prompts
* Projects and workshops hold the same weight to reflect the equal importance of the process of making as well as presenting finished artwork.
* All work in class and at home should be unique and original. Please review the Academic Integrity Policy in your student handbook. 
Materials
Materials will be primarily supplied by the art classroom.
Students are required to bring a sketchbook that will be stored in the classroom. This sketchbook should be dedicated to our class, we will be filling most of the pages. Sketchbooks will be provided to students who need one.

Mix Media Paper (thick paper for drawing, painting, collage), Size Range: 7 x 10 min. - 9 x 12 max., Spiral Bound
